Sydney avant-pop heroine Montaigne, has today delivered the striking video for her brand new single ‘In The Dark’, from her forthcoming debut album set for release later in the year.
The video was directed by Guy Franklin who Montaigne has worked with on her previous videos: ‘I’m A Fantastic Wreck’ and ‘Clip My Wings’. Montaigne reveals when asked about her ardent and intensely personal performance, “the song was conceived in the throes of a dying relationship, with the knife twisted deeper by other traumas, and I wanted to visually convey both the devastation and empowerment I felt from corrupting my relationship in the way I did. It was one of those situations that was so ironic and heart-rending that it was hilarious. Guy Franklin and the team did a great job. Special praise for Chloe Greaves (styling and art direction) & Nat Burley (HMUA).”
Working with producer Tony Buchen again (The Preatures, Andy Bull), ‘In The Dark’ exceeds all that you’ve come to expect from Montaigne. Quirky, percussion-heavy, and interlaced with bursts of brass, her unique and ever powerful voice somehow even more commanding. ‘In The Dark’ is more sonically adventurous than even her previous single, the grandiose ‘Clip My Wings’, which amongst other accolades reached the coveted #1 most played slot on Triple J. While Montaigne’s music will always revolve around the fundamentals of her vocals, lyrics and melodies, ‘In The Dark’ is a bold statement from a young artist not afraid to be creatively ambitious.
